Dear Wheeler,
It is very good to see that the effort to get new blood into the Club is now beginning to bear fruit and as this is the time of year for all those people who have been trying to make up their minds to come out with us and take the plunge, the runs have been kept to a distance more becoming to the beginners. If this is kept up we will be able to re-build our strength in the season ahead, to such an extent so as to make the armchair members sit up and find the strength of the Club to be on a par with pre-war days.
By the time this reaches you, you may know that the N.C.U. delegates walked out of the U.C.I. meeting at San Sebastion in Spain with the clear implication that the N.C.U. was walking out of the U.C.I. This was because the B.L.R.C. had at last gained recognition and had got temporary affiliation to the U.C.I. with no vote and no subscription and that the B.L.R.C. could obtain international licences for its riders. If the N.C.U. had used its five votes this proposition would have been defeated by one vote.
It was decided at the last Committee Meeting to scrub round the Social for this year. The prizes to be distributed as soon as possible. The main reason for this is being that it was too late in the year to hold such a function.
Would Committee Members please note that the next meeting will not be held on the usual day owing to the Easter Holiday. The new date is Monday 13th April at The Shrublands Centre at 08:00pm.
As it is not possible to carry news-sheets etc. about with me, I take them with me to the Committee Meetings, where all are at Liberty to have a good perusal at them.
Here are the Club-runs for April :-
April 5th This is the Easter Sunday and the Club-run will be to Ringland Hills leaving at 10:00am. The racing men and others all leave the Club at Ringland and ride through to Kings Lynn for the Open “25” the next day. Anyone wishing to meet them at Little Fransham for a hot dinner may do so (60mles).
April 12th A leisurely run to Trimmingham has been fixed for this day leaving as usual at 10:00am by the coast Road (60miles).
April 19th This is a special day with an inter-clubrun with the Lowestoft Wheelers, please watch the notes in the “Mercury” for details.
April 26th We hope to have some fast times today as this is the first club event of the season, the Sutton Novices “25”. So all you novices please start training. At 2:30pm there will be a tea run to Beccles, we shall have tea at the White Swan, as this is a new tea-place please make an effort to turn out (35miles).
The passing of Alderman Greenacre has come as a great shock to us all and on behalf of the Club, I have sent a letter of condolence to Mrs. Greenacre, also a I have sent a wreath for which all donations towards it will be gratefully received.
This seems the lot for now and don’t forget your subscriptions.

Dear Wheeler,
The Easter Holiday weather was not very good to us and two of us rode to Northampton against a strong head wind with intermittent showers on Good Friday. On Saturday we went to the Butts at Coventry for the track meeting, after the track meeting we rode to Sandy near St. Neots ready to ride in the St. Neots “25” the next day, Sunday. The event was won by “Digger” Baulch of the Willesden C.C. in 1hr. 1min. 10secs. in pouring rain. After the event we rode to Kings Lynn ready again for the “25” the next day, Monday. This event was also won by “Digger” in 1hr. 2min. 8secs., here we had five of the Club taking part. We later rode home with the Lowestoft Whlrs. and arrived home in time again for tea.
While we are on the subject of racing we have been asked by the Yarmouth Athletic Club to stage a few cycling events on Coronation Day at the Wellesley Recreation Ground. we propose to hold a two mile scratch for the “Fitch Cup” and a “Devil Take the Hind’most”, for the these events we would gratefully receive any prizes members would like to donate.
You will all have heard of Michael Mills loss of his Mother recently and we all feel very sorry for him. Michael would me to convey to you his heartfelt thanks for the flowers and for the letter of sympathy.
On a brighter note now and here are the Clubruns for May, please note the starting times:-
May 3rd This is the day of the E.A.C.C. open “25” and the Club-run will be to Kimberly to pick up the racing men after the event. This run leaves the Yarmouth Public Library at 09:30am (70 miles).
May 10th We have a rather long run fixed for today namely Orfordness with Impromptu tea, leave at 09:30am (100 miles).
May 17th Another club event today sometimes called the race of the season, the Hercules “25” in the morning, marshals will be required. The Club-run leaving at 02:30pm for Bramerton Woods End and will have tea at Rockland St. Mary.
May 24th Miles! Miles!! Miles!!! another long run, this time to Little Walsingham in North Norfolk with tea at Coltishall, leave at 08:30am (120 miles).
May 31st The N.A.B.C. “50” today and the run leaves at 10:00am for Stoke Holy Cross to pick up the racing men.

Dear Wheeler,
Our Secretary,. Teddy Scott, has been exceedingly busy on other work this month, so has asked me to help him out with the Club Letter this time. He tells me that for the season at least his outings with the Club at weekends will be severely curtailed but at least he will be there in “spirit”.
Although not an ideal morning, I think the recent Club “25” can be considered quite a successful event and I am not going to single any one rider out for especial praise, as at the finish I gathered that the few riders who were not satisfied with their times all had pretty good excuses, so we’ll let it go at that, except to say that in the forthcoming “30” you will have your chance to justify them.
On Sunday at 7th June we will run the Pendle “30” on the usual course, starting at 7 O’clock and inthe afternoon the tea run will leave at 02:30pm for Wangford.
The 14th will see several of the boys at the N.R.C. “25” but for the remainder the run is to Tibbenham, leaving at 09:30am., with the racing men and tourists meeting for tea at Hethersett.
On the 21st, the same day as the Kings Lynn “50”, the Club-run is to Cromer, with tea at Eccles. This run leaves at 09:30am.
The 28th June is also an important date in the racing calendar, it being the East Anglian’s “25” and the run for the same day is to Framlingham Castle. Tea will be at either Mettingham or Beccles further details regarding same will be in the Mercury.
Regarding my second paragraph anent the “25”, I forgot to mention the Yarmouth Road Club. As most of you will know they ran a “25” at the same time as us and in order to avoid confusion were also clocked in by our worthy timekeeper Arthur Thorne, to whom we owe our thanks for so ably performing the extra duty. Our thanks should also of course go to the marshals, both male and female, who got up in the small hours so that you fast boys should be assisted in riding yourselves to a standstill with the minimum of inconvenience!! Needless to add that I was present but as the older members know, I get a kick out of it for some reason or other. It was good to see friend Stan Harvey “up the road” again and let’s hope we can rake a few more of the “old uns” out the next time.
The touring season is getting into its stride now and I expect most of you have already made plans for your Holidays, which of course will be spent awheel and for which I sincerely hope you will all get the right type of weather.

We are round to the Winter again so get these saddles down, those big sprockets on and start getting the miles in and talking of miles here are the Club-runs for November :-
November 1st West Runton is the destination of the run with tea at the Manor Farm Eccles (70 miles)
November 8th A change this week instead of having a fixed destination we are having a follow the leader with each member taking part having 15 mins. leading the run, regarding direction only of course, in any direction he pleases finishing with tea at Yelveton (miles – your guess is as good as mine).
November 15th Really a Summer run but we will be different and go during Winter to Hoxne and Eye with tea at the Kink-a-Jou cafe at Hethersett (80 miles).
November 22nd A nice Country Market town in Suffolk, Stowmarket, tea originally arranged for Wangford but owing to a change in tenancy, tea will be at the White Swann, Beccles (100 miles).
November 29th Orfordness brings back memories of the Summer but this time tea will be Kelsale (85 miles).
We hope to get the Clubroom started again on Thursday 12th November, so let’s be seeing you at 7:00pm. Please watch the Mercury for any change in date.
Instead of a Social this winter we are hosting a Supper run most likely at Burgh Castle the first week in January.

Dear Wheeler,
Now we have the Cycle Show over for this year and the new frames and equipment ordered for next year, we can get down to getting some miles in during the winter ready for next racing season.
The Clubroom now well under way, is being well supported so let’s be seeing you on Thursday’s in future at the old St. Peter’s School on Dene Side. A Table Tennis tournament has been arranged within the Club so those who wish to enter please send their names before it is too late.
I have arranged a Christmas Dinner run on December 20th., at the White Swann, Beccles so will those who wish to go please let me have their names as soon as possible. It we have as grand a time as we had last year at Wangford, we shall have nothing to grumble about.
Here are the clubruns for December :-
December 6th Horningtoft is the destination of the run with a diversion to Ringland for the third of our series of Hill-climbs, tea will be at Hethersett (90miles).
December 13th Edgefield Green, a leisurely run this week with tea at North Walsham (80miles).
December 20th Christmas Dinner run to the White Swann, Beccles. Tea will be at Beccles and the all in cost will be 6/- or so (30miles).
December 27th Should be getting cold now and everybody should be full of Christmas “spirit” but not to worry as we pedal our way to East Harling with tea at Yelverton (95miles).
May I remind all active members of the Club that subscriptions for membership during 1954 are due by 31st December this year, this is most essential in order that I may get you affiliated to the N.C.U. without delay. I shall very shortly be ordering some N.C.U. diaries R.T.T.C. handbooks so if you require one let me have your name immediately.
Well our Clubruns are being well supported so keep it up and we should be able to make a splash in the old town yet.
I can’t think of anything else so I wish you all a very merry Christmas and perhaps I might add a prosperous New Year, because the club letter may not be around in time for that.

Business first, the Annual General Meeting will be held at the Shrublands Youth & Adult Centre on Monday 25th January 1954 at 07:30pm to elect officials for 1954 so be ready with your proposals and don’t be frightened. May I remind Committee Members of the Committee Meeting on Monday 4th January at the Shrublands Youth & Adult Centre at 08:00pm.
We are holding our Annual Dinner, Dance and Prize Presentation this year on Thursday 4th February at the Bridge Hotel. Tickets for the Dinner are 8/- each and those for the dance which will commence at approx. 09:00pm. are 2/- each, obtainable from either MR. E.H. Clarke or myself in a day or two, so start getting the people lined up ready for when the tickets arrive.
Well we are still keeping the name of the Club in the picture, with I am pleased to say the selection of myself for one of the six Rotary Clubs Service Awards, also in the Lowestoft Wheelers Christmas Day 10 mile Time Trials, yours truly took second place, with 27mins 6sec’s and J.W. Scott taking third place with 27mins 58 sec’s. J. Smith of the Lowestoft Wheelers was first with 26 mins 38 sec’s.

January 31st A nice village in West Norfolk, this time Shipdham with tea at Hethersett (90miles).

Dear Wheeler,
I have been asked to thank everybody who supported the Dinner and it was appreciated and if the Clubroom and Club-runs were given the same support as the dinner we should have nothing to worry about in the future.
The Novice had better start training as the Henry Sutton Novices Trophy is to be competed for on the 4th April. I think we may have some hidden talent in the Club so the competition will be keen so it is up to those we don’t see very often to come out of hibernation and give the lads the appropriate support. It seems so far that we are likely to be somewhat short of marshals this year so don’t hesitate to offer your services to the Race secretary, Tubby Clarke.
I don’t know if you have heard the tale of the cyclist who punctured, repaired it and was on his way again before the air had time to escape.
Enough of that, let’s have the Club-runs for March :-
March 7th Fressingfield this week where we heard a yokel say something about swinging a wooden leg about and saying “H*** if-a-dint larff”. Tea will be at Beccles (65miles)
March 14th We are bound for Cawston today which lies between Reepham and Aylesham, please see the Captain before the run or see Wednesday “Evening News” or the Club Gossip Column in the “Mercury” regarding the tea place.
March 21st We are making for Kelling this week so if you have any relations or friends in the Sanatorium you will be able to pay them a visit, we return to Eccles for tea (90miles).
March 28th Peasenhall with Lowestoft Wheelers is being arranged for this week, tea will most probably be at Darsham so let’s have a good turn out this time. Please watch the Mercury under “Club Gossip” and the “Evening News” on Wednesday evening for details.

A few alterations have been made provisionally to the prize list which will be reviewed at the end of the season, they are 3rd prizes guaranteed and certificates for all the Handicap prizes. We have been asked to hold the 100 in conjunction with them and our committee have agreed on same.
(Missing Text) of doing any record breaking or just touring now is your chance. We had, I was told, had quite a following of Tandems before and since the War but nowadays one see’s hardly any about at all whilst out on the Club-runs.
It has been suggested that we hold an Invitation Run early after Easter and then we should have our Wednesday evening runs in operation, so if any member knows or gets to know of anyone interested in cycling, whether he or SHE is interested in racing, touring, hostelling or just cycling, they only need to be told of the advantages of Club Life to be enthusiastic about joining, so do your best.
It is all rot to heat interested cyclist’s say that the Wheelers will go too fast or the Wheelers bikes are too posh or that the Wheelers will leave them behind if they puncture or had any mechanical trouble, one has only to go touring on one’s own or “potter” around the countryside to realise what a great fellowship exists in cycling.
There must be quite a few young people interested in cycling, for one has only to look around the town and see the number of lightweight and semi-lightweight cycles there are about.

Dear Wheeler,
Easter found us touring in the Midlands, on Good Friday we rode to Grantham Youth Hostel against rather a stiff wind, the next day, Saturday, we rode to Leicester and then onto Southwell after having lunch at relations of ours. On the Sunday we continued our journey through Lincoln and Sleaford and then onto Kings Lynn ready for the Kings Lynn open “25” on the Monday morning, in which B. Wilsher recorded 1hr 11mins 34sec’s to take second handicap, the event was won by P. Baulch with 1hr 1min 18sec’s taking 3sec’s off the course record previously held by D. Keeler. After the event we rode back with the Lowestoft Whlrs. as far as Hockering where we turned into the lanes to meet the rest of the Club at Coltishall for tea. For a change we had fine weather at Easter although it was rather dull and there was plenty of wind and nearly all the time we had cross-winds which was rather hard work on the open roads and in the Tulip fields.
We have decided to close the Club-room because of the lack of support just recently so starting on Wednesday 28th April we shall be holding Club-runs starting at 07:00pm sharp from the Public Library, the speed and the destination will be to suit those taking part. We will be holding a series of evening Time Trials during the season, the venue and details will be announced in the “Eastern Evening News”.
Here are the Club-runs for May :-
May 2nd The E.A.C.C. are holding their first open “25” today and the run will be to Stoke Ash near Eye with tea at Kelsale (100miles).
May 9th The biggest race of the year, from the Club’s point of view has been fixed for today, namely the Hercules “25”, this is the most coveted Trophy we have and the competition to hold it for one year is extremely keen, so why not come “up the road” and give the boy’s support. In the afternoon leaving at 02:30pm we shall be going to Eccles for tea (20miles direct to the tea place).
May 16th Greta Ryburgh is the destination of the run today while the racing men are riding at Ipswich in the open “25” both sections will combine at Coltishall for tea (65miles).
May 23rd The Lowestoft Wheelers are holding their first open “25” today and I expect they will get plenty of support from Yarmouth. The non-racing members will pick up the racing members at Lowestoft (not literally I hope) and proceed to Darsham for tea (85miles).
May 30th The Club-run will meet the racing members at Hethersett for a hot lunch after the N.A.B.C. “50”, we will then proceed to North Walsham for tea (75miles).
On the 4th April, we held our Henry Sutton Novice “25” and we had seven entries and the Winner was J.W. Scott (Johnny), (don’t get confused), with the very good time of 1hr 9mins 11sec’s, T. Mitchell (Tony) was second with 1hr 11mins 34sec’s and third was B. Wilsher with 1hr 11mins 44sec’s. These times are very good considering the conditions were very bad with cold wind and rain.
Our Captain Ivan Buck has resigned his post due to the pressure of work and I know we would like to thank him for the work he has put into the job. Your Captain now is Bob Goulder who I am sure will be able to make a good job of it. Bob is a good steady touring type so he should be able to hold the Club-runs together and with the co-operation of all members, Club-runs can be appreciated by all.
Suggestions for an all-night run are required for June 20th, the distance must be about 200miles there and back and if anyone knows of a place where we can get fixed up for breakfast, this will be gratefully received.
I must remind the racing members that a finishing sheet is required by the Race Secretary for each event that he races in for the purposes of recording times for the Club B.A.R.

Dear Wheeler,
This last month we have had some very interesting racing with G. Pettingill again winning the Hercules Cup with a time of 1hr 5mins 43sec’s, E.G. Scott was second with 1hr 8mins 22sec’s and the surprise of the day was when near veteran, Jack Lingwood came in with 1hr 8mins 27sec’s, taking third place and first Handicap. In the Lowestoft Wheelers “25” B. Wilsher improved to 1hr 7mins 43sec’s to take first Handicap and his Bronze Standard, in the same event J. W. Scott improved to 1hr 8mins 3sec’s despite a fall at the turn, T. Mitchell also improved to 1hr 6mins 59sec’s. At the Norfolk A.A.A. Championships at the Wellesley on Saturday 22nd, May E.G. Scott retained the Fitch Cup for another year in what was an interesting 2 miles on the grass track also taking 3rd prize in the 440yds and in the 2 mile Devil, both these being open events which fully justifies the taking out of a track licence. Jimmy Campbell recorded 2hr 16mins in the N.A.B.C. “50” on Sunday 30th May also I. Buck recorded 2hr 21mins, B. Wilsher recorded 2hr 24mins 17sec’s and G. Pettingill recorded 2hr 25mins. Pretty good don’t you think so early in the season.
Enough of racing before I get the sack so here are the Club-runs for “Flaming June” :-
June 6th Pendle “30” staring at 07:30am at Chapman and Marwoods Garage on Caister Rd., so let’s be seeing some of you out because it is past the hibernation season now and I am sure that many of you could still manage 15miles either way with tea in the middle at Beccles leaving at 02:0pm.
June 13th N.R.C. “25” this morning and some of the boys will be riding in this event and meeting the club at Burnham Market for Dinner, tea will be at North Walsham so don’t forget your darts.
June 19th/20th An all-night rub has been fixed for Saturday leaving at 09:00pm for St. Neots with breakfast if possible at Girtford Bridge. The distance for this ride is 200miles and will take the form of a reliability trial i.e. 200 miles in 24hrs, so if you are going please let me know as soon as possible so we can get fixed up for breakfast and don’t forget plenty of food for the night and the “Best of Luck”.
June 27th The E.A.C.C. “50” is this morning and the Club will pick up the racing men on their way to Brandon with tea at Hethersett (120miles).
Will you please note that the runs from this month and including this month, that the runs will leave at 09:15am sharp and the club to meet at 09:00am. Tea will also alter to 05:30pm at the request of the Captain and were passed by the Committee.
Will Committee members please note that the date of the Committee meeting will be on Monday 14th June and not the 7th, as this is Whit. Monday. By the way on Whit. Monday we shall be leaving the Library at the usual time for Attleborough for the Sports which attracts some of the best athletes in East Anglia. The meeting starts at about 02:30pm and as it continues to about six or so, no tea-place will be booked so please make your own arrangements.

Dear Wheeler,
I must apologise for not having the Club-letter out in time but my time has been rather filled up of late but never-the-less better late than never.
I gather from the Race Sec. that so far this season 8 Bronze Standards and 1 Silver Standard have been won, this shows that our racing members are getting fast and might I suggest that, despite loud groans from the racing men, time standards will have to tightened up otherwise we won’t have a club left.
Improvements have been great in the 25’s this last month especially on Wednesday evening the 30th, June when Jack Lingwood our near Veteran who is tinning up some of the youngsters improved to 1hr 7mins 59sec’s, R. Fearn improved 3mins to record 1hr 7mins 11sec’s, J. Frostdick in his first “25” recorded 1hr 11mins and I. Buck recorded his fastest of the season 1hr 8mins 6sec’s, 2sec’s from his best and not forgetting E.G. Scott who recorded 1hr 4mins 33sec’s to win the event.
Whilst on the subject of speed the Yarmouth to North Walsham and back record has been reduced by 3mins 50sec’s to 2hr 15mins 9sec’s, by guess who? E.G. Scott (B.H.).
Here are the Club-runs for July :-
July 4th Laxfield is the destination for the Club-run with tea at Darsham (70miles).
July 11th The 50 mile time trial for the Haddon Handicap cup will be held this morning and the start will be at Chapman and Marwoods Garage on Caister Rd., at 07:00am. I gather that there is a shortage of Marshals so if you have any spare time please get in touch with the Race Sec. The tea run to Beccles leaves at 02:30pm from the usual spot (26 or 76 miles).
July 18th The run this Sunday will be to Castle Acre and tea will be at Hethersett or Yelverton where the Club will I expect pick up the racing men who will have been riding in the N.C.A. 100 (100miles).
July 25th Quidenham is the destination of the run today near New Buckenham, tea will be either at Hethersett or Yelverton (90miles).
I expect everyone will be sorry to hear that Harold Clarke will be leaving us in a week or two to work in Lincoln. With many others I shall miss him very much as he has been in the administration side of the club longer than anyone else. I am sure everyone will join me in wishing him all the best for the future.
