It is with great sadness that Gt. Yarmouth Cycling Club has to announce the passing of one of the oldest surviving members of the Club, John Parker sadly passed away on Friday (19/05/2023), he had suffered a stroke the previous Sunday and had been in hospital, with his condition improving but things taking a turn for the worse later in the week and he passed away suddenly in the early hours of Friday.
John had been a member of the Club since the mid 50’s, with most, if not all, as a serving committee member, 53 years as the Club’s Treasurer (John in his working life, was at the Midland Bank, so money matters a natural choice) – an awesome achievement.
John did ride a few Time Trials (his last competitive race was in 2007), most of John’s Time Trials were with the watch in his hand, timekeeping the event. John’s preference was Sunday morning Club rides and touring, over recent years, out with his son Tim and Clive Reynolds. If it wasn’t for John and another sadly departed GYCC stalwart, Jack Lingwood, who together kept the club afloat in the late 60’s and early 70’s, the club would not be looking forward to celebrating the Club’s centenary next year.
Our thoughts are with John’s close family and friends at this sad time.
